It's VERY hard to tell. Police, lawyers, judges, parents of teenagers, salespeople, politicians - all have been trying to develop a system to A) con people successfully, or B) avoid being conned. Body language can tell you a lot, but many people can cover for that. The best way is through evidence. Factual inconsistencies provide openings to probe for the truth through questions. It's called cross-examination, but it's hard to conduct in ordinary conversation without appearing investigative.

Depends on the source and secondly if what the person tells you makes no sense, then it is usually a lie. The truth never sounds confusing, if you have to try and figure out something that someone says or something about what they say just don't add up, then it's usually a lie. The truth feels right and generally sounds right, it very rarely leaves us wondering or questioning!

Over a period of time, you discover whether what that person has told you turns out to be true or not. So they're building trust with you, and hopefully you with them.
