If it is a long haired dachsund, it should have a fluffly soft coat with slight feathering by 6 weeks of age. If not, it will unlikely never have a really long coat. but it should have longer hair than a short, or wire hair. Most of its length is reached by 6 months of age, but can get longer when hormones set in, and age. My Gordon Setter did not have a show coat until she was 4 years old! Even then, it was not as long as some other top show dogs.

It depends whether you've got a longhaired breed - you do get short-haired and wire-haired dachshunds you know!

It should be fairly evident from birth whether they're long-haired or not - certainly by the time they're up and running around they should have proportionally long hair if they're ever going to. So like, from a few weeks old.

if you have a longhaired dachshund, it should just keep growing since birth. if you have a shorthaired or wirehaired dachshund, the hair will never grow long.
