I would go for just the front claws. In the chance that kitty does get out * knock on wood*...cats do their defenses with their back feet mostly.

I have both of my indoor cats front declawed only.

most vets will only remove the front claws we have 2 cats with the front claws removed and every 3 or 4 weeks take nail clippers and clip just the tips off the back paws so they are not sharp it works well for us hope this helps

First of all, I work at a vet hospital and I really don't think people realize how painful this is for a cat. Please, I know that they tear things up but try to reconsider. There are alternatives, they have these little plastic sleeves that you can actually put on the cats claws so that they cant scratch.

BUT...if you need an answer, only do the front. Its hard for them to jump, walk, or run without their back claws. Plus, even with the back claws they really cant do any damage. You don't want your cat to become lazy and lethargic, which may happen without back claws.

Besides, if your cat realizes that he has NO claws what-so-ever to defend himself if he needs to he may become more aggressive, I have seen it happen quite often. They need SOMETHING to defend themselves with, just in case.

i can't think of any good reason to declaw a cat. They are born with claws, and most people should realize that a cat likes to scratch, because it is in their nature to do so, BEFORE you commit to buying it. That being said, perhaps you should think about alternate pets that do not enjoy scratching, as these would be better suited to your tastes and environment. Fish for example, can't do any damage. Changing an animal to be how YOU want it is pretty ridiculous. They are animals you know. Behaviors of pets are well known and should be thouroughly researched before deciding to share your life with a pet. People shouldn't be able to pick and choose what natural things they like and don't like, and then alter them to suit their needs afterward. It doesn't make any sense, just like chopping off a dog's tail or pinning ears, to be paraded in a circle? Who decided that is what looks good anyway? sounds crazy to me. When you declaw a cat, it's like cutting off the first joint in your finger. That's pretty dramatic. Try soft paws, a lot of people say they work really well, the cats don't seem to mind them, and you only have to put them on every 4 weeks or so. Also, this seems to be a strictly American practice. Go figure..

Just do the front! If your cat ever accidentally gets loose it will have no way to defend itself! And the back claws don't really do any damage anyways.

how cruel you americans are removing your cats claws would you like it if you could not climb trees or defend yourselves against other cats or even big hairy horrible dogs. it is illegal over here in britain because it cause so much pain. they were created to have claws if you didn't want your furniture ruined you shouldn't have brought a cat/kitten in the first place

Declawing cats is as barbaric as de-vocalising dogs. Why would you surgically alter a pet purely for your own convenience?

If your cat has sharp claws - and they will because this is NATURAL, they can be trimmed! Cat need their claws, do not deprive your cat of them because your pet hasn't conformed exactly to your ideal of a pet cat. Disgusting.

I'm with Natalie and Jenni C. My cat has all his claws where they belong, at the end of his paws. Besides, it is more fun to play w/ him when he can draw blood. Believe me, HE DOES.
