I have now bought 5 diff digital cameras and each time I buy one I specifically ask for one that is good with action pictures...Apparently the employees do not know cameras because everytime I try to take pictures of sporting events, the pictures come out very very blurry. I Dont want to buy an SLR but I heard that there are advanced point and shoot digital cameras? Anyone OWN one of these types of cameras and have used them at sporting events that could tell me what brand/model/quality of action shots?

If anyone wanted to email me an example of an action shot they took with their camera just so the quality myself, that would be awesome.

Thanks

i highly recommend you starting off with canon [ canon s3is ] with 12x zoom and 1/3200 max shutter speed. the zoom is tremendous compared to regular cameras which has only 4x. remember this 12x zoom is all optical, which mean the quality is retained as you zoom far away. the lens is also high quality and is good for low light situation, but since you said you want action sporting events then the light should be more than enough for the camera. to do this you have to either go on manual or shutter priority and set the shutter speed to about 1/800 of a second and your pictures will look frozen. go a little faster say 1/1200 and you'll be able to see individual droplets of water from splash of the pool on a swimming event, given the lighting is adequate. the price is about $300 and im sure you can get one for significantly lower price.

You will probably want to look for a camera that has variable shutter speed and aperture control. Manual controls on both of these features would be helpful. The faster the shutter speed the better capability you have at taking fast-speed photos, like sports. Be advised though that faster shutter speed equals less light coming into the camera, which is why you need manual aperture control to open the aperture. Maybe this is helpful.

Hi,

I don't have any examples of non SLR action shots, but I have a lowly 350D and it still was enough to capture this image:

As far as compact cameras go I would probably also vote for the S3IS or even the G7.

Hope this helps!
