The easiest way would be to get the metro to St-Michel Notre Dame and either change there or walk along the river to the Musee d'Orsay. See the map here for details: http://www.frenchculture.com/images/metro_map.gif

There are a couple of ways.

From Gare du Nord take the RER B marked "Direction : Massy-Palaiseau" to the St. Michel Stop and Change to the RER C marked "Direction : Versailles-Rive Gauche" and get off at the Musee D'orsay station

or

Take the #42 bus marked "Direction : Hopital European George Pompidou" to the Champs Elysee-Clemenceau stop and change to Bus #73 which will be marked "Musee D'Orsay".

NB: Phil's suggestion of walking from the St. Michel is a very good idea if you're not burdened by luggage and its a pleasant day.

The walk along the river is very scenic and I certainly endorse the idea of walking. It's about 1500 meters from St. Michel to the Musee D'orsay which is a little less than a mile.
