That's odd, you started out with a statement of opinion but then took a sharp left into question land. One might ask if they ever had a soul (question 1) and when if left (question 2) if it did (that's 3 questions). And then there's a whole slew of questions beyond that - like if they can't feed themselves or show no interest in food, is it ethical to withold sustenance?
Personally, I'll go with we have no soul (nothing supernatural here at all). People in persistent vegetative states are the responsibility of their next of kin.

I would hope that our soul is still inside the shell oblivous to the state that the body is in and still ready to move to the 'other side' at the time of death. (vegetative states or people that go into a vegetative state at some point in their life is a real test of faith.....to some it may seem that our soul and everything that makes us 'me' ---is still all completely and utterly part of the brain that may become injured and change you completely.) this would then mean all we have to look forward to is the casket and the shovel and blackness. oh well! that's life. we live. we die. our worries are over.

That depends on whether a person believes that the soul is separate from the mind. It depends on your philosophy perspective. That question is still trying to be answered. I believe that the soul knows when to leave if the body gives up.

Those are people who didn't develop the motor skills part of the brain, unlike most of the people you see walking around in the street able to talk.
It has nothing to do with a soul.

In a vegitative state, the brain is not working, machines are all that's keeping the body alive, and that's only mentally. I would say there's no soul in that case.

to me the question really is, would they survive without the intervention of man?
and if not, how do we know that it was not god's plan for them to die in this way.
could we be doing untold damage and causing pain to the soul by keeping the body alive after the soul has departed?

No, the soul did not leave the body, they are a living soul.

Souls leave if they don't like the situation. You may have a soul, but don't forget, your soul has a mind of its own; and if it gets disgusted or annoyed it may leave.
Typically, if someone is in a coma the soul gets very antsy, and usually leaves.

I would imagine they still have their soul
until they are physically dead
then their soul will leave their
body after death
I never heard of this before

We don't have absolute proof that ANYBODY has a soul.
I believe it's possible that we do. But until I know for sure about regular walking-around-healthy people, I'm not even going to speculate about people in a PVS.
