This is a huge misconception. The straight answer is, if your body needs the calories than it needs the calories, plain and simple. Just don't eat them 30 min before going to bed. 2 hours is sufficient

Yes as is eating lighter foods in the evening.

Breakfast comes from break fast. It is good for the body to have that emptiness at night. There are likely references to this in your health section of the book store. Look under fasting or other nutritionally related titles.

I would go for six pm.

The stomach can develop a hernia if you over eat and lie down while you still have food in there. Some people are more vulnerable than others to that.

Eating after 6pm many not be a good idea. It can cause you to gain weight according to your activity level.
