I have several lighthouse pictures for reference and they are all taken on land. My preference is for the one that has tree branches at the top on either side of the picture. There is a picnic table in the forground. My problem is composition. Framing the lighthouse with green leaves is good, but what else can I do to make this picture special and not boring?

I wonder myself with your discription, what i would do myself painting one is have the top of the branches at the same height as the light house on the other side of the painting. with a jug are something in the middle of the picnic table. up to about half the height of the lighthouse and tree. this is how i would have done it myself. but you might not like that idea.

The best thing is to draw the picture then paint it in watercolours. Start with a wash and build it up layer by layer.
Do not think you have to copy the photo you can move the trees or table around. you can add or leave out ect.

I like paint acting in some of my painting. but I am not sure how big your painting. you could paint reflection.
I would have the light house to the size a bit not in the middle.
or maybe do the light house as the focus point with a lizzard
Any way have fun and enjoy painting

If your think about the frame maybe you could put flags around it.

hm...it would help if we could see the reference photos. But i would say, a picnic table and lighthouse at the same time are too much. You should only have one thing in a painting that your eye is instantly drawn to, so don't be afraid to leave negative space to accent it. Perhaps, depending on the view, you could do some great clouds? :)
