1.)Don't buy the one that came with the lunch box.
any "name" brand will do. just pay a little for it.
2.)Prep the thermos before you place the item in it.
put ice water in it for 5 minutes before you put in the milk
or boiling water before the soup.
The thermos" Steals" the hot and cold from the item- so charge it up with the temperature you want so the item you want to keep hot or cold is not balanced by the themos's own temptature.

Whichever brand you get, fill it with very hot water before you put soup or whatever else in it. This will help keep it hot for a prolonged period.

Back in the day, my teachers had a microwave for such things as cup-o-noodles and thermoses. I would see if your child's teacher has the same thing.
