We have a beautiful home, all hardwood flooring.....WE DO have a cat and a dog...O.K. So they DO shed....That could explain it. BUT.....
I just dust mopped the entire floor 5 days ago. And today, five days later we did it again and had enough dust to make two MORE dogs. I don't get it. Don't say.."Get rid of the pets" If we HAVE to have dust cause of them....O.K. Is there anything else we can do? Something else we can use? I cleaned out the closets today and the pet don't go in there and the doors stay shut. But....lots of dust, gander...Whatever its called....Filled the floor...Yuch! Would carpeting all over be better? HELP PLEASE!!!

Good points from the other answerers... plus, even just living closer to a main road will carry a lot of dirt. Consider investing in a HEPA filter for your furnace or something like that. They make different levels of furnace filters for how much you want to spend and filter out. Carpet will just hold all that dander and it's harder to vacuum out.

Do you live near a dirt road? We have the same problem.
We are approxamently 3 acres away from a dirt road, I've always blamed it on that but I dont know if thats the problem for sure.

Carpet would be worse in my opinion because all it does is trap the dust where you dont see it, but its still there I promise.

****One other thing to consider would be 'air duct cleaning'****
My sister had this done and she swears by it.
I plan to check into it as well.
Heres a link I think youll find it very interesting:

I'd check your ventalation.

I have 2 cats and 4 dogs all inside and don't have that much a problem.

routine cleaning every day or so can help keep it under control. Check your air filters. Maybe get an air purifier.

Bathe the pets as well, I bathe mine once every 2 weeks.
