I am buying a dog with my girlfriend, she wants a girl and I want a boy I am trying to convince her not to get a girl because they go in heat and they get pregnant and I think it would just be easier just to deal with a guy dog. Tell me if they have menstrual periods because I know if that happens my girlfriend is not going to want the girl dog.

If you get the dog spayed it will not have menstrual periods.

If you don't get her spayed, she will, like all female mammals, have a menses cycle from the age of puberty through menopause.

Fix the dog, regardless of whether you get the boy or the girl and please, train it.

Yes they have oestrus cycles, not quite the same thing as our periods. Female dogs have seasonal oestrus cycles from about 4 - 5 months old. During this time her vulva will become swollen and bleed/discharge. It can be very messy, especially in large dogs! But male dogs can also be pretty repulsive when in heat (which is most of the time with males)- they like to hump everything, including the sofa, and including you. I think your girlfriend would object much more to a large randy dog humping her (and they do ejaculate) than to a bit of mess caused by a female dog.

Believe me when i say you should get any male or female dog neutered. Even if you don't care about finding yourself landed with unwanted pups - or your dog impregnating someone elses - neutering saves from MANY health problems - primarily breast cancer and pyometra (both fatal) in female dogs, and prostate cancer in male dogs. Yes the operation can be expensive - but if you can't afford it, you really can't afford to own a dog. They ARE expensive, there's no way of getting round it - they're like kids!

Please PLEASE don't get a dog unless you are prepared to look after it properly - and that means neutering

No dogs do not have menstrual periods they have heat cycles twice a year. No matter if you get a male or a female it should be spay/neutered. It will be healthier, happier and live a longer life.

The heat cycle is not like a female's period. Although the ***** does bleed. It is way to much to explain here.

If you get the dog fixed it really wouldn't matter now would it? Not only would you not have to go through heat, the dog would be healthier and live longer.

Yes of course they do but the craziness is much less than in women.
Male dogs like guys try to make every thing their own, but they do it by peeing on it
Females can be fixed and then no more menstrual cycles.
Male dogs can be fixed too but like guys, sometimes they never change.

Yes, female dogs menstruate like humans but not as often. Dogs go into heat every 6-9 months after their first year of life. A female dog is more loyal though and not as apt to run off like a male dog. Male dogs like to run off so they can find 'a girlfriend' so to speak. But like the second person said, you should get your dog fixed, so it doesn't add to the over population. Good Luck!

yup yup... they have a period, just like a woman, they have a certain point of the month where they are most easily pregnant. When your female dog ( aka B I T C H ) has her period, you have to go to the pet store to buy a special diaper for her. ( so she doesnt leak all over the place. )

Yes, and it is very messy because (ick) the blood goes everywhere during their periods. All female mammals have one.
