It was worth it for me. After all of the heartache and headache it caused me, I am glad that I did it. Being a Marine like my daddy was the only I wanted to do from the time I was 8 years old. I was going to retire as a Marine. Didn't work that way. But, unlike so many, I will never wonder what could have been. By the end of my 5 years, I was burned out, and had goine just about as far as I would have made it in the Marines, but I believe I had a satisfying and rewarding career. I left service with an honorable discharge as a Sergeant. But only you can answer that question.
I entered the Marines at 18, six months out of high school, and I mature more in the next 13 weeks than I did in the previous 18. I learned discpline and honor, I learned my limits, both physically and emotionally. Like they say, they break you down, and every Marine has been to the edge, and once you look over the edge and come back, nothing will ever be the same.
I am a better person for what I did.
But I leave it up to you to decide.

I did 17 years in the Corps. First off, let's get one thing straight: Recruit Training will make you cry. I don't care how macho, how strong, how tough..the DI's are paid to break you down and build you up and it will be the hardest and the most rewarding time of your life.
That being said, I wouldn't have changed a thing. It was the best move I have ever made. I became diciplined, strong, respectfull and the most important thing was I had direction and purpose in my life.
Each time I went home I saw all my friends from High School doing the same thing, in the same places, for the same reasons, and it was absolutely mind boggeling. Here I was, the same age as them, and yet I was seeing the world (Hawaii, Japan (x2), North Carolina, Norway, Mississippi, Arizona, California, Ohio) was a member of the most elite fighting force in the world, work experiance that also gave me leadership and management skills, and a chance to go to college - tuition paid!
Why are the Marines different? Tell you what...when you are walking around with that friend, and he states that he is a Marine, what are the reactions? Yeah, I know...pretty awesome, huh? Remember, less than 1% of the population of the United States have claimed the title United States Marine.
The money is great considering you have full benefits, college tuition, room and board paid for. I was making over $40K towards the end of my career and I never hurt for money when I was in. However, nothing you do when you first start is going to pay great...just ask anybody who graduated with your friend, and they AREN'T getting medical/dental benefits nor is their college tuition paid for.
Just remember, however, that people do not join the Corps because of the money or the benefits...it is the committment to excellence, the challenge of becoming a Marine, the dedication to defending the freedom of your country that makes you decide to join and make a sucess out of it.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me at weazelusmc@aim.com.
Good luck and tell your friend I said "Welcome Aboard, Devil Dog!"

i admire the marines and all the warriors in conflict zones so so lots, yet with the state that the international is in now i might heavily think of roughly it and rather think of this with the aid of for a whilst, and don't enable your self be in any respect persuaded with the help of acquaintances turning out to be a member of, seeing as there are squaddies and marines in the middle east and that they desire greater squaddies you will certainly be deployed little doubt and it may be a shame in case you have been to get into an twist of fate or replace into injured. i admire you particularly for this yet i actually might recommend no longer likely, besides the fact that in case you bypass an are not getting injured you will possibly be mentally twisted up upon returning domicile after seeing undesirable issues which you will never of skilled right here in north usa. even with your selection i'm hoping you're making the main superb selection for your self and do what you think of is optimal. sturdy success in life!

The money isn't going to be too good, but that's the same in every service. They all get paid the same.
If you know what you are getting into then the Marine Corps can be great for you. But a lot of people get in and they realize its not so easy to be elite.
I would check out the reserves too. You don't want to get in and then realize you can't handle the lifestyle but then you are stuck for 4 years.

im army but you can bet your life that joining the Corps would be the best thing that you can do, the Marines will train you to be invincible, and that there is nothing that you cannot achieve through hard work and belief in your yourself as a Marine, I wish the army trained us like that but they dont, and the Corps is all about tradition and respect, I lived with the Marines for 6 months in afghanistan, as a soldier i was never in my career treated with more respect, sign up when you can, you see what it did for your pal

If you are planning on going into the Marines for the money, you might finish basic training.

The Marines will instill you with discipline. That much is for sure. However, we are engaged in a horrible conflict. The Marines who die in this war don't even see their attackers. One minute they're riding along in their Humvee... the next minute their faces are melted off by an IED. This war is only going to escalate when we attack Iran. Stay out of the military, until we remove the Republicans and Democrats from office. Both parties are corrupt and must be cleansed.

The corps makes men. Unfortunately at the moment, it can also make you a corpse that gets drug through Baghdad. There will be plenty of time for you to get your life together. Maybe the Marines are for you but not right now, you know?
Go ahead. Thumbs me down people. This young man's life is more important to me than your ideology.
