I have a Pekingese who is small and cute with long fawn fur a cream tail that stretches to the top of his head, enormous big brown eyes and a face that would melt your' heart, he has a dummy tit forever in his mouth and 146 toy animals which he likes to take them in turn out for his walk, he is just like a baby.He will let you tickle his tummy for hours.

Unfortunately there is a down side.

The toy that he takes out a walk he normally drops, pees on then looks at me as if to say "well pick it up then" which I do.

He really enjoys terrifying anything that he thinks is stealing
his thunder.

He pees on the cats and attacks any male dog... the bigger the better.

He likes to sit in the garden of an evening and often comes in with a couple of snails in his fur.

Children he can't stand and if they have a dummy, a sweet or a toy he thinks it is his.

My last one lived 'till he was 22 so don't buy a peke unless you are single.

Hope you find a nice dog for the children but not a Peke.

I have a Shar-pei and he's great. He is a bear-coat which means that he could never be shown as he doesn't meet the standard - his coat is long, but he is a great companion. He is very much a one-man dog though and is totally devoted to my husband and "loves" me in his own way. That said, we also have a small spanish "street dog" that we rescued and he too is a great little lad. Dogs are such good companions and they don't let you down. Enjoy whatever breed you go for!

Mutts tend to have fewer health problems than pure-bred dogs, and there are many adorable mixed breed dogs in shelters that need good homes. Speaking from experience, beagle mixes are small, cute, sweet, and make great pets all around. Many other small mixed breed dogs would probably suit your needs, however. Local shelters and rescue groups are full of good candidates for adoption. To get a sense of the temperaments of different breeds and mixed breeds, you might consider using the advanced search on Dogster http://www.dogster.com/search_advanced.php to see what owners say about their experiences with their own dogs. The “Doggie Dynamics” chart can give you a lot of info about the dispositions of different breeds and mixes. Hope that helps and good luck with your search!

I have a shih-tzu and know several people who also have shih tzu's, they are very cute dogs, and small and great around children, unlike some other small dogs that have a tendancy to bite. They dont need much exercise which is great when you also have children to look after. They dont bark often which is also another habit that small dogs have.

Hi, i love all dogs, but my girl is a Shiz-su and she is the best little woman ever, very fun and clever and very caring, if you pretend to cry she will cry and jump up on you and give u a rite big kiss on the face... Like i say all dogs are lovely just get one that fits with your life, i.e. a bigger dog will require lots of longer walks and eat a lot more food than my girl..LOL.. also, i wud rec you have your pet insured .. Good luck with what one you decide...

Bichon frise, they are the sweetest cuddliest fluffiest little bundles of joy! Extremely good with children, they just love people. Best of all they don't moult, but do need regular brushing, which is easy and takes 10 minutes. Clipped every 3months or so. 9-11 inches is the breed standard so they are definitely small!

Boston Terriers are what your looking for. Super smart, kid friendly, and cute to boot. They are one of the top 3 family dog picks of breed. Good luck, I hope you enjoy what ever dog you get.

And by the way I don't have one of these dogs but I know several folks and families that do.
