why do people say "its the greatest thing since sliced bread."

is that really what people think

the great wall of china, the pyramids, even a lava lamp to me is better than sliced bread.

do people really think that in thousands of years the best thing that humans have ever invented was sliced bread?

whats the big deal with sliced bread anyway? if you got a nife and a loaf of bread, slice the damn thing, its not really that hard.

why do people say that?

Dude, if you want a serious answer about God, the ask a serious question. When man advanced in knowledge, somebody else sliced his bread and he went to the supermarket and purchased it there. Now we claim to know so much that we've forgotten how it was back "in the old days". I'm sure that when people could go to the supermarket, they thought it was a ggrreeaatt thing to have bread already sliced, but now it's just another thing at the store your mom or wife tells you to pick up while you're there.
Who do you serve, the Creator or the created anyway? God is greater than all other things because He made all things, or gave man the knowledge for them. Believe it or not, before the knowledge increase of man, none of the conveniences you have excised at all(including the computer you are looking at).
God bless, and have fun with all that sliced bread and other inventions.

I'm not sure why you put this question under religion and spirituality, but at the time sliced bread was first available for people to buy, it was a big deal. Many people find that slicing fresh bread squishes it out of shape. Along came sliced bread that had perfectly even slices every time. You may take it for granted now, but when it was first introduced it was amazing, hence the expression, "The best thing since sliced bread."

Of course it's just an expression and now a cliche and not particularly effective, but the first time the expression was used it was clever and made a clear point.

Is this even a serious language question? Sliced bread is a pretty handy convenience...couple slices off the loaf, lettuce, mayo, ham, maybe cheese, blam, you have a meal. Is the great wall of china even in your thoughts daily? The only real reason to not value sliced bread is if you always have a cutting board out on a kitchen counter and a good bread saw and a love for the occasional nick from said bread saw. Good god, question something useless like "shooting fish in a barrel" - did anybody ever try that? Weren't the fish *there* in your hand when you put them in the barrel?

Before 1930's you had to slice the bread yourself or have the baker slice it for you. So it was a great innovation and helped with the sale of toasters. In the 40's it was used more in a sarcastic way.

You can live without seeing the Great Wall of China or the Pyramids and without a lava lamp but who hasn't had bread. Making slices made it easier to have sandwiches. And take your lunch to work.

God is for everyday, so you can even take Him to work with you.

I love home baked bread, i make it all the time. i can't cut slices at all. I'm the worlds worst bread slicer. already sliced bread is great, so neat and even, wonderful. just doesn't taste as good as homemade.

Come on now. It's just a colloquialism. Yet I have to say, colloquialisms are really the best thing since sliced bread.

People say that because they heard it from their parents.
Their parents say that because for a fleeting, brief moment a bread slicer was a wonderful invention.
The saying caught on.
However, your comment can be used to show that OTHER matters learned from parents can also be set aside and allowed to rot.
For example....the teachings of hell-fire, trinity and immortal soul.
There is nothing there, just like the big deal about bread slicers.

Sliced bread was a convenience for most people, as it was uniform.
