A true Israelite is a direct decendant of Jacob whose name was changed to Israel.

From Jacob, there are 12 tribes of Israel:
Jacob had 12 sons... and 10 of his son's are the tribes of Israel and 2 of Joseph's (Jacob's son) son's are considered tribes of Israel as well.

There are many Jews that are not direct decendants of Israel. Some may be decendants of Esau... some may be decendants of Abraham... some may not be from any of those

but only those directly decended from Jacob would be considered Israelites
