The purpose is to unwind so locations within a 1/2 days travel by train or auto would be preferred. The beach would be best but by no means a requirement.

I would stay in the area of Castelli Romani.
It's not so far from Rome and not too crowded in September.
There are 16 small towns / villages and it's a real landscape.
Here a few links for yr checking.

If you prefer to move farer from Rome the I could suggest you
Umbria or Tuscany region (where I live)-
There are really a lot of farms (agriturismo) that can offer quiet and relax.

If you prefer the beach I would move to the coast from Porto Santo Stefano till Punta Ala (high Latium - low Tuscany coasts).

Well, just an hour north of Roma is Orvieto and there is a small village near by across a drawbridge that is spectacular- It is up on a tuffa and very peaceful and sweet. If you prefer to go south then there is always the Amalfi coast area.

head about 2 hours northeast of rome to spoleto in umbria. a really charming town with beautiful scenery and some cool things to see that are nearby. we really enjoyed our stay there and recommend the farms you can stay at, such as L'Ulivo.
