I got 2 fillings done at the dentist this afternoon at 1pm, and now the anaesthetic has worn off and they feel quite sore. I've already taken some ibuprofen an hour ago, but there's a sort of dull ache in the whole top right side of my mouth where I got the fillings.

Is it normal for it to hurt after fillings? I've never had any before, so I don't know what to expect. How long will it hurt for and is there anything I can do to get rid of the pain other than take ibuprofen?

I have to go back next week for some more fillings and I'm scared to go back now, because my teeth didn't hurt before I got them filled!!

It is normal for your mouth to hurt a little after you get fillings. The dentist has to poke around and it can make you sore. Take your ibuprofen and by tomorrow or at latest the day after you will be fine. I understand you are nervous about next time, but trust me, a toothache is way worse than the soreness. Let me give you a tip for next week. Call your dentist a day or so before, and ask if it is OK for you to take ibuprofen before you get there. I do sometimes and it doesn't get as sore.

It's not uncommon to feel pain after having treatment done, when the dentist administers the anaesthetic he injects directly into the nerves and this can lead to some internal bruising amongst the nerves and blood vessels leaving the feeling sore and tender, this normally disappears in a few days.
Another reason could be that the fillings are to high and when you bite down your putting extra pressure on the teeth as they dont meet due to the filling being to high.
Keep taking the pain killers, but try and limit the dose as your body will become immune to them in the end and you will get no relief.
Contact your dentist if this hasn't resolved and try not to worry about the next appointment, as i said it's not an uncommon problem but it doesn't happen everytime.

Of course if your dentist has been a bit heavy handed it will hurt after anaesthetic wears off. These excellent modern anaesthetics do encourage fast, productive and heavy handed work. Take a large whiskey, that might help. After having major hospital surgery myself, a meagre dentist is no longer able to frighten me with fillings.

Don't worry - it can take a few days to settle down - especially if you had two done at the same time. Go back and have the other ones done - look after your teeth! A little bit of pain is better than bad teeth.

honey this is very normal. it does hurt for a bit. i think you'll make it worse by thinking about it too much so just calm down and keep yourself busy to take your mind off the pain. and if u dont get ur fillings done the pain is much worse and lasts forever so even though the pain is bad right now, it wont last that long. good luck :)

I've had some fillings, but I don't remember them hurting. I would say if it doesn't get better by tomorrow, call him. It might just be sore from the drill beating the teeth up

You have just had drilling etc. so yeah it's going to hurt. It's due to the manipulation and digging out rotten matter. Take some more pain killers and you will be fine. You must go back and get the rest of your filings also.

It does tend to be sore for a while, but when it's settled down it will be ok. Don't let it put you off going back, decaying teeth don't get better on their own and will start to hurt eventually!

Is it possible that the pain is maybe coming from the injection site, I usually feel pain after where the injection was in the gum, but it wears of by the next day.

They will hurt, because everything will have been 'got at'. Ibuprofen is not very strong. Maybe a painkiller like codine will help.
