You could use musroom soup for the gravy or a cream soup. you do not want to use tomato soup unless you had tomatoes in the stew. The juices from the stew and a cream soup with the browned flour will do fine.

In a sauce or frying pan melt a couple tbsp. of butter, then add the same amount of flour and cook it for a minute or two so take away the raw flavor of the flour, then add some chicken stock or even some water and tomato soup, stir it well and added to you stew.

Whenever you make a stew, now is your chance to prepare the best gravy on the block with real, all natural stock.
The flavor of natural juices cannot be surpassed. Deep, rich flavors create the perfect gravies to finish your dishes, complementing them without overpowering them. -- pan drippings from roast
1-1/2 cups water or broth
2 Tbsp. cornstarch
1/4 cup cold water
Remove meat & vegetables from pan and place pan on burner over medium heat.
Mix 2 Tbsp. cornstarch with 1/4 cup cold water, stirring until smooth. For every cup of stock. (ok to use cold beef broth if you like more flavor.)
Stir into pan, bring to boil and boil until thickened.
If you do not have cornstarch you can use flour and make a roux by, using butter (or margarine). Just melt about 2T of butter in a frying pan and slowly add flour (stiring constantly) until you have a thin paste. Then add the stock and whisk over med heat until you reach the desired thickness.

It will probably work by browning the flour. If it's not thick enough just mix some cold water and flour to thicken it more.
I have added tomato juice or whole tomatoes with the juice. I can't say I've ever tried tomato soup though, worth a try though.

What I have found very delicious is a mixture of a can of beef gravy and a can of diced tomatoes (mixed together and pour over stew; tomato soup is excellent as well mixed with the beef gravy because it gives a thicker sauce). It's good, trust me!! Good luck

I would make a rue. That's fat(of any kind) and flour in a pan. cook it and add that to your stew.
