If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

I dont care what anyone says, the people of ancient times were not STUPID. If the were you wouldnt have things like the seven wonders of the world.

It is comparative. Jesus is saying that eternal life is so important, not only should everything else be lower in priority, it should not even be on the priority list. When you read scripture, you need to ignore the chapters. The context of this comment is found in the previous chapter. There were many people who were making excuses to Jesus. Some say "my father this" or "my new wife that". They were not very committed to their eternal soul.

We need to all ask, "What is the greatest hinderance to my not asking Christ to be Lord and Savior." It is your answer that needs to be put on the "hate list".

well I don't think Jesus meant for the person to hate their family. The reason He said that is He wants His followers to give up any Earthly concerns. When they follow Him, they have to care about the world and everyone who lives in it, not just their families.

That is why Catholic priests and nuns can not marry. Their lives are totally given over to God and Jesus. And Jesus mission becomes their own. Can they keep in touch with their family? Sure. But they have to disconnected from them and material concerns.

Given up one's life for Jesus is the ultimate price you pay to be a follower. A disciple must be willing to lay down his life for his belief in Jesus. This is why someone should "hate" their live to follow Him. Your earthly body should not matter since you are expected to die for your faith. If someone pulls a gun on you and demands you dismiss Jesus as your personal savior, what would you? That is a hard question if you think it over. That is what being a disciple of Jesus means.

And where did you see this? What Chapter? What verse?
I can promise you this, Jesus Christ Never ever taught HATE, he Never taught division. If you want to know the FACTS, then look at the bOOK OF Acts and read it in it's entirety.
This is the Doctrine of Jesus Christ. Oh Yeah, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN ATHIES!!!!! For all do know Him, from the greatest to the Least. You my friend are just Deaf, Dumb, and BLIND and you Reject the Truth and the evidence out of your own ignorance. Believe or not, GOD STILL LOVES YOU, HE knows every hair on your Head (Even if you Shave it), and Jesus Christ still died and was ressurected FOR YOU.
PEACE.

Not hate, despise, which meant something different than what the modern term "despise" means.

We think of the word despise and we think hate, loathe, disgust and disdain. Back then, the most popular meaning was that you think it not worthy of your concern, as in "they despised any thought to their own safety".

Also, please note that He said this about His disciples, not everyone. As you can imagine, He needed His disciples with Him 24/7 during that critical time, and if they spent their time thinking about how family and friends were, they wouldn't be totally there for Him.

I hope that helps you understand the deeper meaning :)

If you look at this verse at face value it may seem rather harsh. But in essence, what Jesus is trying to say is if you love your mother, father, sister, brother, even yourself more then you love Jesus your not worthy to be called His disciple.

Jesus did not mean literally hate your family and etc...as love is the law. He specifically meant not to be attached to your family. For Jesus also said, do not call anyone father but your Heavenly Father. Your first duty is to God...not your family. So if your family tries to pull you away from God...you must be willing to go against family. You must honor your earthly father and mother, and you must love them and others (enemies and such) - BUT you can not be devoted to God if God comes in second in any way.

If you are going to follow Jesus you got to give up your life. All of it. Family, Sin, everything, I wish more of US Christians would clearly declare this when witnessing to people.

because Jesus (peace be upon him) taught a concept that is similar in Islam, love and hate for the sake of God.
