Hot carl sagans question reminded me of this thing that bothered me greatly when i first started being a believer. In genesis, when God is cursing the snake, God says He will put enmity between the womans offspring and the serpents offspring. Enmity is hostility, a deep seated ill will. If God puts something like that into us, doesn't that go against free will?

The Quran says Adam and Eve were forgiven (hence, no child is born into "original sin")

No. What you read in Gen 3:15 was the war between God and Satan had commenced and you can read about the end of this war in the book of Revelation when Our Messiah will crush the 'head' of the serpent

Gen 3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou [art] cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

Gen 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

Easton's Bible Dictionary
Enmity

deep-rooted hatred. "I will put enmity between thee and the woman, between thy seed and her seed" ( Gen 3:15). The friendship of the world is "enmity with God" ( Jam 4:4; 1Jo 2:15,16). The "carnal mind" is "enmity against God" ( Rom 8:7). By the abrogation of the Mosaic institutes the "enmity" between Jew and Gentile is removed. They are reconciled, are "made one" ( Eph 2:15,16).

Just a bit of commentary.
Who is the woman's seed? Who is the serpent's seed? This isn't about us. Women don't have "seeds". The seed comes from the man biblically speaking. This is talking about the only place in the Bible where a woman had a "seed"...in other words...a virgin birth. Mary. They "woman's seed" is Jesus. The serpents seed is the children of Satan.

1Jo 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

My understanding is that God will put enmity between Himself and those that are children of Satan....which is what we have seen. God singling out those that are not "His"...those that are considered by Him to be Satan's children. Those not believers. I could be wrong but that's my understanding in looking at these verses.

I've also heard it explained in the following way:
Eve's offspring is (eventually) Jesus
The serpent (actually Satan) is addressed by God as well.
In other words There will be a war between Jesus and His angels and Satan and his minions....

I found that a very enlightening

If there is something that God has made a part of human nature, that doesn't go against free will. We can't fly. Does that limit our free will because it prevents us from making that particular choice? Humans have various inborn characteristicas that are part of human nature, just as God has certain characteristics that are part of divine nauture. God cannot do things that violate divine nature, and we are bound and limited by certain elements of human nature. Free will doesn't mean being able to do anything we can conceive of mentally. It means being able to make moral choices, within the context of human nature as defined by God. Animals cannot do this. They do not have moral capacity, and therefore do not have free will.

Good question. Free will is about our actions. I may have feelings of hostility against a person but I have the free will to decide if I will persecute that person or if I will leave that person alone.

I may take some slack from my more fundamentalist brothers and sisters, but I don't take the early creation stories that literally.

I have asked on here a number of times for those who believe that man has a freewill to just give one single verse in the Bible that says that people have a free will. I have never gotten a single verse in response to that, probably because one does not exist.

I think what we have here is an attempt at explaining why people don't like snakes. It has more to do with the origin myths than with actual "free will."
