In the early years, tons more, airline pilots make $20-25K in their first year and maybe $25-30 the next year, pilot pay gets better with seniority but I dont know what the software guys make, if its 6 figures, airline pilots dont make that until they are 40 or so...

Starting software engineers make more than starting airline pilots. Very experienced (10+ years in) software engineers make less than airline pilots.
Software engineers start at about $60k, and generally max out under $100k (unless you become a manager/executive). In addition, as a pilot you are compelled to retire at 65.

It's tough to get in as an airline pilot for a major airline. It takes many years and you still have to get a little lucky (plus airlines haven't been doing that well recently). If you can speak some Indian dialect or Chinese it will be easier for you shortly (with a major shortage of pilots in that region).
Where as w/ software engineers, if you get through your degree program you can pretty much get in somewhere.

I know plenty of software engineers who make well over $100k. I do and so does the guy I car pool with, some contractors are making $2-300/hr. It depends where you are, how good you are and what you are doing.

Systems and software engineering isn't a job you can just choose and expect to make good money, if you don't have the mindset for it no amount of dedication and work will allow you to get to the higher pay grades. That could be seen as a bit arrogant of me, but I have a long history of outperforming other engineers and used to be a principal consultant in the UK defense industry.
