Took my 9 month old puppy for blood tests yesterday. The blood work was fine but in the biochemistry, the urea was a little high. The norms are 3.0 - 9.0 my pups was 9.6. The vet said she is in good health. I asked if her kidneys were okay, and he said yes, that if the urea was high and the creatinine at the same time, (and he said really high levels) then we should worry but with just the one thing, she is fine. He said that it could be high in dogs that eat alot of protein. The night before the blood tests, puppy had lots of chicken for dinner. Could this be the reason it is high?? Also her A/G (don't know what this is) is a tiny bit high and he said that stress at the time of blood test could do this...Thanks alot for any advice you can give. :))

You are right in thinking the 'chicken dinner' may have been responsible for that. Another common cause is the dog stealing cat food. Also, the A/G (Albumin, Globulin) values can be affected by stress.
When she goes in for her yearly check-up, ask that the tests be run again..This way you may learn whether you need to modify her diet for optimum health.
Your dog is so lucky to have a truely caring owner.

Increased Blood Urea Nitrogen
Pre-renal: dehydration, decreased blood volume
Renal: renal failure
Post-renal: obstruction
Extrarenal: recent protein meal, fever, muscle trauma

If you are concerned, discuss it with your veterinarian. Or, if you wish, seek out a second opinion. You may wish to get a second chemistry to see if the value is still increased or back to normal. Maybe not having water caused a change in the pups value.

Protein could be a cause. Both the BUN (urea) and the Albumin/globulins can also be affected by dehydration, so if she hadnt had any water overnight that can also be why (not that it was wrong for them to tell you to do that) As long as the elevation doesnt persist, and her CREA values are normal, you dont have to worry yet.

It sounds like it. Don't worry about it.. you answered your own question, the vet said unless both things are high, don't worry. Only one is high, don't worry. Just make sure it gets rechecked.

repeat the test, but this time make sure she has no food or water after about 10 pm the night before so you can get good results.

i agree with ginball. You vet is the best person to talk this over with.... not anyone in here. You have no idea who you are getting advice from. You need a vet to answer this?????Weren't you just talking to your own vet.????? You can't trust your own vet then get a second opinion from another vet but by God do not ask people in here about your dog illness.

Adding this.....thumbs up to Sara.. I agree with her 100% .. matter in fact i think I am going to give her a thumb up , something I don't do to often..

If you need a vet to answer your question, then you should probably call a vet and not waste time posting questions on here! Nothing drive me more crazy than people who have animals that need serious medical help and they ask people who have NO background in the field!

Call your vet and ask the same questions. Don't trust anybody's medical advice on this forum.
