My 4yr old daughter has been potty trained since 2 1/2 yrs old. She can wipe herself, except when she doodys. I try to tell her that once she starts school next yr, she'll have to do it herself. My husband says I should let her, but I don't want her ruining her underclothes & smelling bad. I've tried those Breck flushable wipes for kids, but she won't use them. What's the best way to get her to do it & teach her the best way? BTW, I've taught her the importance of hand washing, so she knows how to do that.

thank you, James for your knowledgable
insight. If my child was an animal, I would have posted this question in the 'pet' section! Gee, how many pets, er, children do you have?

You have to have confidence in her ability to care for herself at some point. This is very basic stuff. Teach her to wipe from front to back ALWAYS. You don't want her carrying germs into her vagina.
She may object to the flushable wipes because they feel cold. There are baby wipe warmers available, or you can also teach her to ball up the wipe in her fist to warm it first.
She may be more efficient if she stands and bends forward. Teach her to continue wiping until the tissue is clean.

If she understand the importance of washing her hands, then you should tell her that wiping her bottom good is just as important because of germs, and her underwear will become dirty from the poopy that stayed on her bottom. Maybe you should let her wipe and then do a second check afterwards. She will get it down pat.

Have her wipe herself, then do a quick check to make sure she did it right. I feel sorry for you, I had the same problem, only with a 4 y.o. boy @ my work, and being the only male, I got stuck with helping him. Not fun. Good luck!

Let her wipe herself first, then you wipe her to make sure she got everything. If she hasn't gotten everything explain to her that sometimes she has to wipe multiple times to get everything. Just keep doing a follow-up wipe until she can get everything all by herself.

To wipe a four year, successfully use a cleanisg wipe and cover it on a roll pin. Show your child the pin, and make her sleep on the floor with the pin as her only comapion, she'll grow attached to the pin, and relieze it can be used as a cleansing tool. This has worked with all my children, and their very well behaved, especially when they are let out of their cage.
Happy Mothering.

this will take time, before you know it, they can master it themselves. Teach them basic skill, then as time goes by, they will know what to do....
