The inverter allows the motor running the compressor to be a variable speed unit - so rather than turn on for a while, then shut down, the motor can just gently run at a lower speed. Quieter and a little more efficient too

It used to convert DC current to AC current generally
when you find this associated with motors so that means a it controls the speed of the motor so it can works more efficient
