The Word say that the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. The serpent at this time was not a reptile, it was close to a man but yet pure animal and it could talk and reason. the word subtil is taken from the Hebrew word ma'hah which means "having a knowledge of the principals of life". Now this serpent actually seduced Eve and Eve commited adultery and conceived a child from that and there is where Cain came along. That is why Cain is not mentioned in the genealogy of Adam in Gen. 5 for he was not Adam's son but was the Serpent's son or seed. For the Serpent did have a seed as Gen 3:15. Satan took advantage of the Serpents faculties and used him to inject himself into the human race just as God through virgin birth would do the same later. That is the reason man can see an affinity through a chimp or an ape. But the closest thing was cursed and became what we now know as a snake. That is also why science will never find the "missing link". Check out this web page but this claim is backed up by much scripture that is not mentioned here. http://www.endtimemessage.info/originalsin.htm The first Adam failed as did Eve for she took in another seed. But the last Adam, Christ will not neither will His Bride for She will take in only His Word seed and not mix it with another word seed of creeds and dogmas such as the Whore of Revelation 17 which is a church calling herself the bride but is a whore(catholic church) who has daughters(protestant) who take in creeds instead of the pure Word of God.

The bible says that the serpent tempted Eve. Some believe that the serpent was satan, but it does not actually say that. God punished serpents to crawl on their bellies for tempting Eve to disobey. The devil doesn't appear as a serpent (or possibly a dragon) until Revelation.
To an atheist, this all sounds ridiculous.

God was speaking to Satan, it was Satan that he cursed; saying he would go upon his belly eating dust all his days, God was referring to the fact that he(God) would no longer provide spiritual things to Satan, God would put Satan in spiritual darkness, in essence, crawl upon his belly. If you keep reading a little more, you can see this is so because God says he will put enmity between him and the woman and between his seed and the woman's seed. He will bruise you in the head and you will bruise him in the heel. This is showing that Jesus will destroy Satan as a bruise in the head is fatal but first Satan would bruise Jesus in the heel, Satan had Jesus put to death, but just as you recover from a heel injury, God resurrected Jesus back to life, the seed of Satan is all that follow him and the seed of the woman (God's heavenly kingdom) is all that worship God and follow Jesus as his disciples.

According to the story, satan asked all animals which one would let him use their bodies, and no one agreed but the snake. So God took away the snakes long legs and let it slither for all eternity.
So the story says.

And why did Moses later use two snakes on a staff as a sign of healing?

Snakes enjoy crawling; it is not a punishment.
Adam and Eve and their talking snake lived a charmed life, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I have wondered this, too.
Why not just punish Satan and leave all the innocent snakes alone?

Well, here's the rub on that.. it is a jewish rip off of ancient sumerian and babylonian creation myths to begin with.. the jews don't see satan as a fallen angel, but rather being in god's employ.. this falls on christians to throw interpretation at it where it's not warranted.
