Look I understand having a needle phobia but there is nothing in the tattooing process that resembles a needle....It is more like a pen or pencil with tiny wire bristles on the ends. I also know that you are expecting this horrendous pain....and its not like that at all. To me getting tattooed feels like little sparks falling on to my skin. It burns for a sec and then goes out but there is always more and more of them falling and burning. It is more annoying than it is painful. I am getting 8 hours of tattoo work done next weekend.....without any kind of pain medication......What you need to do is take something with you that will help distract you.....a book to read, music to listen to or a friend to talk to you and keep you distracted. Do you really think that people with tattoos would have them if the pain was that excruciating?

I would not take a high powered pain reliever like vicodin before you get a tattoo but I have taken excedrine, because it has both tylenol and aspirin in it and that helped reduce the amount of pain I experienced during the process of getting my tattoos and for my drive home from the parlor. You aren't allowed to be drunk or high when you get a tattoo, I would think that taking a vicodin would produce about the same effect as being high and if you seem out of it when you go to get your tattoo, the artist might think you are high or something and refuse to do your tat.

My tattoo artist says no, it's not okay, and she won't tattoo anyone who has anything in their system (even Advil.). I think it's a great opportunity to get over your fear of needles. Also, it's really fun to get to go, "Oh, yeah, it hurt." I'm not great with pain either, and my tattoo is on my foot (which, I learned right before she put the needle to my skin, is the second most painful place on the body), and, to be honest, it hurt a whole, whole lot. Now I have a beautiful tattoo, though, and it was worth going through it, so maybe you'll find the same thing. Good luck.

alcohol is not a blood thinner it acts as a diuretic flushing fluid from the body thus thickening the blood.......vicodin has an acetaminophen or Tylenol base so it has no affect on platelet aggregation I would say that you should not take it because it is a narcotic and can negatively affect your thought processes and may make you appear drugged and any safe artist does not work on someone under the influence. No Motrin that can cause bleeding so plain Tylenol would be the best thing for you to take for a mild pain reliever anything else is a bad idea.

This is specifically for an arm tattoo, any other spots I'm unsure of. If you're worried about the pain of the tattoo, it wears off. Your body will produce endorphins and once they kick in, there will be a dull pain when getting the tattoo, almost like your arm is slightly numbed, or the slight soreness after getting punched by someone. Although I'm unsure, I believe that it's similar when getting tattoos on other areas of your body.

Nopes...thins your blood. I too have a needle phobia from a traumatic childhood event and I was able to get one for 1.5 hrs and I'm getting an addition this Friday. It's really not that bad. Realistically, the needles are in groups and they are entering your body at a rate of 250/second hence...it doesn't feel like a needle. You'll be ok - really...it's not that bad. Most tattoo artists won't touch you if they know you have any substance in you.

The tattoo place I used to go to would make you sign something saying you are not taking any drugs or painkillers and you are not drunk. Yes you COULD lie, but those questions are asked for your protection. He would not tattoo you if you were under the influence of prescription pain killers or alcohol.
You could always try henna tattoos. And tattoos are really not that bad. It helps if you don't look at the needle.

most pain relievers cause thinning of the blood. it isn't like you will gush blood uncontrollably but it will make you bleed more than you would have without. no matter if it is alcohol, asprin or whatever other drug you chose.
tattoo pain isn't really that bad. i have a thing with needles but tattoo needles aren't the same as hypodermic needles used for blood and stuff. i say go without pain management the tattoo will mean more if you have to go thru some pain to get it.

You're better off using something like EMLA cream which is a topical anaesthetic. Have a chat to the potential tattoo artist about your fear and they will be able to advise you and put you at ease and if they don't - GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!
