Like, when you eat jam and peanut butter, there are preservatives in there. But when we eat them, no side effects! Why aren't there any bad effects and what kinds of chemical preservatives are poisonous?

Chemical preservaties are harmful because the body digestive system doesn't recognize that stuff and will properly eliminate it or store it somewhere because it doesn't know what to do with it. When something's foreign in the body it reacts and we suffer the consequences with sickness or illness.
To avoid chemical preservatives purchase items that are labeled as NOT having them in it.

They're not harmful...
All of those preservatives will help keep you preserved many years from now.
