If the wick is really long trim it to a 1/4 inch and light it with a lighter or a match.

First of all, my grandma told me that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask... so ignore the stupid answers I'm sure some people will give you.
When you first light a candle, there are some things to consider so that your candle lasts long, the wick doesn't burn away or drown in the candle wax.
1. Make certain that your candle is on a protective surface so it doesn't drip on the table, etc. I suggest a really nice saucer. It works well and it's easy to scrape off the extra wax that may drip onto the saucer.
2. Don't place your candle in a draft or wind current. This will cause your candle to burn unevenly.
3. When you first light your candle, use either a match or a lighter. If your candle is in a deep candle holder, I suggest you use a match instead of a lighter as it's easy to burn yourself with the lighter metal parts.
4. When burning your candle for the first time, only let it burn for one hour then blow it out. Let the hot melted wax that has pooled around the wick harden before lighting your candle again. If you don't do this, the wick will burn down and will drown in the melted wax and it will be really hard to keep your candle burning after that.
5. NEVER EVER leave your burning candle unattended. Always blow it out, even if you leave your room for just a few minutes. You can always light it again.
Enjoy the atmosphere!

Ok, firstly make sure the wick is straight (the peice of string coming out of the top), you dont want it to be bent or curled up.
Secondly I find using a match better as it extends out further than a lighter.
Now simply hold the flame to the wick and bingo, 1 lit candle. Make sure you put the match out, and if you are a little worried put the candle on a plate, tray, or suitable metal object to stop the wax from dribbling onto stuff.
Make sure also you dont have it lit near flammable materials e.g. curtains, and that there is nothing directly above it e.g. a shelf.
Finally, if you leave it unattended, even to go to the toilet, put it out. This really is the most important part as unattended candles are a very regular cause of house fires.
Hope this helps, and dont feel dumb, it is always better to ask than to burn your house down.

Simply strike the match or lighter and light the wick, and blow out the match. Before you light the wick, make sure to cut it to a 1/4 inch length. If the wick is too long, it will smoke. Never leave lit candles unattended. When you blow it out, take care not to blow too hard because the melted wax could spray onto the surrounding area. Enjoy your new candle.

Since it is a new one , cut the wick a little bit shorter and get a lighter or match and put the fire to the wick. ^>^

Ask your mom or dad. Eight year olds should not be playing with matches.
