Ask, When you got into a furniture store ask what the style is. Tell them you are a little uneducated about it and would like to learn what the different styles are called (nothing wrong with doing this, this is how your learn). I would pick out your furniture then your paint. Take swatches of the fabric to a paint store and ask for help coming up with a color that works.

contemporary style is usually clean, straight lines and not too much knick knacks. Traditional is the opposite.
