The daily recomendation for my body is 6 servings of bread a day. If thats considered a minimum for health, than why is the "Low carb diet" so popular and isnt it successful?
Is it best to have that much bread?
What are the benefits of whole grains?

as little bread as possible. if achieving optimal fat loss or health is the goal then processed carbohydrates should be consumed at a bare minimum. all natural foods contain more nutrients and less calories than processed foods. the more whole foods in the daily diet the better the results

The national health guide says all kinds of things that seem to change over time, so what is proper to eat now, might not be in the future.

Anyway, the food guide is based on getting nutrients, without excess calories, you need enough calories to function, but not so many you get fat.

So first you have to read, how much is in a serving of anything, and figure out a diet from that (if you want to go by the food guide.)

But a low carb diet is good for losing weight, but can cause liver or Kidney problems for some people. And once you go back to eating carbohydrates, the weight comes on.

Whole grains contain, the roughage, the nutrients (germ) as well as the white bulk. Think of white rice VS Brown rice, or white flour VS whole wheat flour. each is made from it's exact same grain, but in one , all is there, in the other only the white carbohydrate.

So eat healthy and varied for the nutrients, but remember, your calories coming in shouldn't be more than the energy expended living. otherwise you gain weight

The reason low carb diet is popular is because when you don't have carbs to burn off for energy, your body go straight to burning off the stored fat (assuming you are eating enough.. however, it can also burn off stored muscle). That's why there is a bunch of hype about it.

Low-carb diets really aren't healthy in the long run and you SHOULD have adquete amounts of carbs a day. Don't make all your carbs come from bread either... vegetables and beans should make up some, too.

When it comes to bread, "whole grain" means enriched white flour + whole wheat flour. They trick you into thinking it's 100% whole wheat, when it really isn't. If you want 100% whole wheat (which is VERY healthy and what you should aim for), then the bread must say "whole wheat" on it. The benefit whole grain and whole wheat has over white is that they have more fiber and they don't cause insulin to spike and crash (which isn't healthy AND causes you to have constant cravings for more bread).

Very good question..

Low carb diets do make people skinnier, but they aren't losing body fat. They are losing their lean muscles.

When you eat carbs, it gets converted to glucose which turns into energy for your cells and central nervous system. However, if you don't burn off that glucose, it gets stored as fat for later use. With no carbs, first you dig into your liver for more glucose, and when that is used up you dig into your muscles to turn that into glucose for you. So carbs are your bodies preferred source of energy.

Whole grains are better for you tan white grains because they have no been stripped of all the vitamins and minerals. A single wheat grain has 3 parts to it. There is the germ, the bran, and the endosperm. The germ has few vitamins and minerals, the bran has loads of fiber and a little protein, and the endosperm has nothing. The bran and germ are bulky and heavy and that is what gives whole wheat products a heavy feel to them.

People decided they liked the endosperm the best, so they began refining grains, which basically takes off the bran and endosperm. When they did that, they noticed a bunch of side effects in people from lack of essential nutrients. Since then, they've been enriching refined grains with SOME, but not ALL of the nutrients lost in the refining process.

So it is better to eat lots of whole grains in your diet. Feel free to email me if you have any further questions.
