It depends on how you do it and how much you're willing to pay. At a Passport Acceptance Facility or By Mail:
Routine Service 10 Weeks (normally 6 weeks)
Expedited Service 3-4 Weeks
Obviously, if you mail it, it could take longer to get things started. You then also have to pay to mail the forms.
The fee for routine service is $97 for adults and $82 for kids.
The fee fro expedited service is $157 for adults and $132 for kids.
It is possible to get it faster but you have to call them to find out how to do this. 1-877-4USA-PPT

It is currently taking 8 to 10 weeks to obtain a US passport. Prior to the recent wave of passport applications it was taking 4 to 6 weeks.

Recently it's taking 10 weeks for most people. If you have less than 2 weeks left before travelling though, you can make an appointment at the local passport agency. They can take care of it in as little as one day.

there's a huge backlog now because everyone is slowly beginning to realize that they need a passport to fly to Canada and Mexico and other places that didnt require it for US citizens before. The 10 weeks sounds about right -- before it was quicker, but now it just takes longer. You can pay extra to expedite it, and that will cut the whole process down to about 3-4 weeks, or maybe even faster. I doubt that you would be able to get it in one day -- the only way that works would be for some documentable emergency reason, like one of your parents is dying in Germany and you have to go see them ASAP. Basically, the sooner you can do it the better.

Still waiting for mine. The website that you can check says it will come on Apr.10. That's over 10 weeks from when I applied.

Chris, it would help if you stated what country you are in, we are not mind readers. But every country is different. And a lot depends on how accurate your info is.
I have never heard of a temporay passport. You either have one or you dont.
