I am not in service but have been around and near Ft Lewis forever it seems.
You are going to one of most beautiful areas in United States and a very heavby concentrtion of military as within just a few miles you have the Airforce MC Chord, Bremerton Naval across from Ft Lewis is Natioanl Guard camp.
FT Lewis is largest city in washington State in land mass and in all other forms. You will have very large year round snow covered mountian to view, and a few minutes you can be at sea or actually Fort has soem small lakes and borders larger one, American Lake with under used Golf course and nearness to sking and winter sports at very inexpensive cost.
I-5 is major freeway major and living south or just southeast of Ft. puts you in many samller towns with less crime better schools than you can find in either Tacoma or S. Tacoma./
The city of Tacoma sucks, stinks to high heaven even on its best days, has very high gang and crime rates, the police have one of highest amounts of out of court se
settelements in US.
Olympia just 15 miles down a road, ten to 15 minutes travel, has cheaper rents for nicer housing, some of states best shools, they are relatively small in class sizes and way laid back in community involvement with parks lakes and trails within or very close proximity no matter where you live.
A couple of community colleges and plenty of places for working in service industry or jobs with clerical skills in state or state associated work places.
Tacoma is begining to find some culture other than slum lords and bloc partys with art gallarys opening in down town area, sidewalk shops and oh yes most important of all, Coffee shops and sheds on nearly every corner selling Espresso coffees.
I believe it is a very unique area as one can find interest from viewing out door type endeavors to cultural aspects and all without the Eastern clutter of too overpopulated to enjoy it atmosphere.
Has one of best areas of racial harmony one can find anywheres in states. I mean that truthfully. Other than in the certain areas of Tacoma where a constant Asian -Black gang scene is prevalent.

Sorry I can't help, I was there in a way... my Dad was there before he went off to fight the North Koreans when they invaded South Korea in the 1950s.
I wish you the absolute very best in finding a good place to stay.
