They can do both.
Don't let your hookbill bird get to rocks. They can ingest them and this can cause crop impactation or get stuck somewhere in their digestive tract and kill them.
If you think your hookbill has eaten a rock, get it seen by an avian vet immediently to determine if it has or not. They can get it out of your bird if they need to.
Also, parakeets/hookbills do not need grit. It causes the same problems. All hookbills shell their seeds and do not need grit to digest their food.

All birds love chewing on items, such as paper and wood. They don't eat this, they just busy themselves for entertainment. Another reason they chew is to keep their beaks in good condition. Rocks aren't usually a chewing choice for birds. If they're small like pebbles, they shouldn't have access to them. Ingestion will cause problems.
I would advise you to give them grit. Some people don't believe grit is good for birds, but it actually is good for them. It helps with digestion. It does not impact within them or cause them problems. Food passes through their digestive system softened, mushy. Grit helps them pass this substance and keeps the vent from clogging. If a bird cannot pass his food because of a clogged vent or clogged digestive tract, he could become very ill. Crushed oyster shells are best and you can find them in most any pet store. And this provides birds with the extra calcium they need for strong beaks and bones. Mating birds especially need the extra calcium source.
Don't worry about your "chewing" keet. As long as he's healthy and active you have nothing to worry about except the mess. HA HA Good luck.

Most birds, are very selective. They will eat parts of the seeds and live the outside husk alone, if they cannot find any thing to eat then they may go back and eat that husk.
Most birds need rocks to be part of the digestion system, they eat it to provide a media in their "Gizzard"(this is an organ that grinds the food in their digestive system, food is stored in the gullet and digestive juices softens the food but it is pulverised in the Gizzard. Have you seen a bird with teeth ?

Parakeets love to bite and chew things: they'll chew just about anything, even your hair if they dangle into their cage!!!!!
The only thing they don't throw out after chewing is their seed and other food. Just be careful about what you let them chew, because something toxic can harm them.parakeets do not EAT rocks, but they do lick it and attack it with their beaks.
