I have a long history of depression. I have been on many meds and most do not work. I'm currently taking Cymbalta and while it does do some good (no more suicidal thoughts), I still have a lot of the symptoms of depression, i.e., lack of energy, no motivation, lots of sleep, isolation. My doctor (a psychiatrist) has recently added Focalin XR. It seems to be helping. Any thoughts of taking an amphetimine for depression? Is anyone out there doing this?

My mother was prescribed Adderall. This was in addition to some other meds. Her Dr. explained to us that it helps with some of the side effects. It helps to un-fog the mind so you can concentrate and get on task. Get some things accomplished. It gives you the get up and go that depression and some of the meds take away. We were very pleased. She got a job, went everyday and worked very hard. She would go on walks and tidy up alot. I think it just helps you get back into the swing of things.

Good luck.

Consider adding Wellbutrin to your Cymbalta instead of an amphetimine. Wellbutrin has mild stimulant properties and might give you back your energy. Amphetimes used to be routinely prescribed for depression a long time ago when they first came out, but aren't now do to their side effects. Another drug to consider is Provigil.

I hope your psychiatrist knows what s/he is doing. It sounds like a very bad idea, so I would encourage you to immediately report any changes in your moods.

Using amphetamines is associated with a crash that follows, and with gradually increased tolerance. It is associated with preventing sleep and sleep deprivation is correlated to depression.

Is your pschiatrist also recommending ways for you to change your behavior in support of improved moods? If not, you might want to look into seeing someone who will.

Should not be used.Extended use can increase dependence.Abrupt withdrawal from stimulant if taken in high doses can cause extreme fatigue and mental depression.
