Well what i did initially was i used nicorette microtabs.i found them very good.with patches they just put a tiny bit of nicotine into your system but with the microtabs you get an actual hit of nicotine.i actually enjoyed them and it really broke the actual process of smoking.i gave them up about 2 months later which was much easier than giving up the actual smoking cause theres more factors involced in that.i was off them for 2 years when i slipped back into it again but have since given up again.i am off them since august again.this time i went cold turkey and the way i am thinking about it and i think is a very good thing to remember.when you get a craving think that it will be easier in the long run to say no.if you give in youre back to square one and you'll be kicking yourself.its tough but if you say no its much more benficial in the long run.also remember theres a difference between physical cravings and mental cravings.look into that aswell.and cravings of any form go away.they dont linger for too long.best of luck to you.if you want to ask anymore email me.take care

Tried many times over 30 years, longest was 4 years, shortest was 3 hours, What finally worked for me was a prescription drug called Welbutrin (Zyban)

You eat these pills and can smoke at the same time, after about 2 weeks, taking a drag on a cigarette is just as satisfying as sucking on a peice of chalk, by the end of a month, you don't feel like smoking, and you don't get the cravings, Physical or Psychological.

It's worth the price to try for a month, (About $100 in Canada)
Ask your doctor
Life without smoking is great.. Nine Years now. Still no smoking urges.

I was stupid in high school and college and smoked a bit. It was a way to "fit in" I guess. One day (December 28th, 1997), I was smoking a cigarette at work and I just didn't like it. There was something about it that tasted wrong.

So, I decided right then and there that it was going to be my last one. I just stopped. I decided it was my New Year's Resolution. Since then I have not smoked one (or anything else).

Sure I get cravings still after 10 years. But someone said once that even after a cigarette, that stress will still be there. Now I can smell it on everyone. It smells gross to me but then again the cravings are still there.

I did but went right back to it because I like the taste. The best thing to do is keep your mind off of it. Do a lot of stress free work, ie)excercise, go out with friends, avoid bars and clubs for at least 2 weeks, because you would be tempted there. Drink lots of water, take naps in the day when you normally would get a cigarette. Carry 5 different flavored packs of gum and chew on a different one everytime you get the urge. Last but not least wash your clothing with a fabricant to get the smell out so you dont feel the need to smoke.

My grandmother had a heart attack and she quit cold turkey. Soon after-my grandaddy quit-he used a nicotine patch. I quit because I got pregnant. If you don't want to quit-you never will. My mom quit too-while my dad was out of town-because he didn't want to quit-it made it hard for her. He went out of town to work for a month and she was able to quit while he was gone. She has not smoked since-he still does.
