there is no medical evidence that supports statements of resistance training stunting the growth of the human skeletal system. people have been saying that for about 30 years now and to date there is still no proof, just the standard rhetoric spouted by those with no real knowledge of human biology.

I can only tell you from experience. My brother is 5'2" and he was lifting weights around your age.

He wanted to be Arnold back when he was the terminator and not the governator...

I cannot say for sure he would have been taller should he have done it later but I think it didn't help. I have heard that weight lifting stunts your growth but I've never looked much into it.

Stick to curls and leg lifts, leave the squats with weights and stuff that puts pressure on your spine for later. There's tons of time to be buff later. :)

No, weight lifting will not stunt your growth or hurt you so long as you do the exercises properly.

Weightlifting is all about tiring out your muscles so they're forced to repair themselves and get larger to cope with the stress - do it wrong and you either won't get stronger or you'll hurt yourself.

If you want to learn to lift properly (you'll get the maximum benefits and won't hurt yourself), check out www.menshealth.com They have tons of free articles not only about different exercises, but also how to do them properly, what NOT to do, and they have forums where you can ask people who've been working out for years any questions you want.

Lifting heavy weights stunts the growth plates in your body. If you're just lifting dumbells, it shouldn't affect you much. Standing up is fine, just stand againsed a wall to be sure you're not using your whole body to lift the weight, just your arm.

It may not stunt your growth but it could damage your spine and any number of other bones, ligaments and tendons. Get a personal trainer even if only once to get the basics down. Maybe one of your friends or their parents know about it too.
