Professional body. Hmm. Methinks this is in the wrong category because 'body' was in the question.
A Professional Body is a concern representing a particular group of people. Its purpose is to regulate and act in disputes between parties that come into conflict and possibly lobby Government, among other things.
There is often a charge for Membership but I have always found that to be worth while.
If I'm on thee wrong tack, please forgive me!

Do mean a professional body that regulates a particular inductry. for example the British Medical association. If so they simply regulate that profession and provide guidance on practice.
If you mean a professional body as in a football player, professional bodies such as them are to provide eye candy for us girlies.

To provide both self-regulation and also support and assistance to members. For example, Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors maintains qualification standards for members and also provides education grants, professional indemnity assurance, and I believe there is a welfare fund. In many ways a "union" for professional workers.

Well in nursing it's:
An organisation that is responsible for self regulating its members. Called the NMC - Nursing and Midwifery Council and it has powers to strip a nurse of her registration.
It's also responsible for acquiring a body of knowledge through it's own research which has to be of a high academic standard.
Professional bodies also have a duty of care to the general public.
They must be seen to be open in all their dealings.

What do you mean by professional body? Professional dance? Swimmer? Football player? Business executive? Your question makes no sense, sorry.
