The current issue of ESPN Magazine has a short interview with Chuck and Dan Patrick at the very end of the magazine where Chuck basically says he can take Shaq even with the size advantage because Shaq has no training.

I know the training is a huge deal, but is it enough to overcome such a size advantage

Chuck would take out Shaq with ease. Training is a huge factor. Shaq has no experience and training. Size is a very overrated factor in fighting, look at Couture vs Sylvia and countless other fights. I remember in the early UFC days when there were no weight classes watching numerous fights where the smaller guy took out the bigger guy. Paul Varlens who was 6'8 or so go taken out a number of times by smaller opponents. Shaq would get caught because he does not know how to properly defend himself in the situation.

You all forgot about 'Shaq-Fu'. I think that people underestimate Shaq because of his size. He is a very good athlete, and basketball players have to have excellent cardio to be able to run up and down the floor for 30+ minutes. I'm not saying he would win, just that it wouldn't be as easy as people might think.

Chuck is a fighter, and fighters have to be cocky. If Shaq did answer the challenge, I'm sure that Chuck would train against big men just like Randy did before his fight with Sylvia.

I think it's a funny article. I mean, if Tiger Woods said he could beat Shaq at golf, would the golf forum be discussing whether or not it was possible?

He probably can, but keep in mind Chuck train and live fight. He's bigger than most average person, in incredible good shape, very strong, fast, and have lot of experience under his belt. So it's not like a random martial artist from any gym can take on Shaq. Only those who are the elite and very good fighter can take on someone like Shaq but even they would still face some problem due to Shaq's size lone.

i have to go with shaq...........seriously. i don't believe chuck has the strength to get shaq on the ground. shaq also has a sizable reach advantage. i don't see chuck being able to hurt shaq with his punches either. and oh by the way shaq does have some training. he has stated before that he occasionally trains mauy Thai in the off season to help stay in shape. i know that i am probably considered the laughing stock of this post but i believe chuck would get handled by the daddy

From what I know, Shaq has no chance. Another poster has said that Shaq trains muay thai in the off season. If he trains pretty hard with full contact sparring, sure, he might have a _chance_.

SOmeone with no fighting experience is going to lose, no matter how big they are, against a strong, trained fighter. A mediocre fighter who is massive would be another story.

I would say Chuck could take him easily. He can take Shaq down very easily, because Shaq won't know how to defend. From there it's a fairly easy process to get some kind of rear naked choke or something similar. if he stays behind Shaq, all his muscle won't help.

Look at the fairly small guys that have taken Sapp down. And he "knows" how to fight!

Wow this would not even be a fight. Chuck is a professional fighter. That would be like asking Chuck to be Shaq in a game of who could dunk on who. Chuck would destroy him. Hands down.

asking if Shaq could beat Chuck in a fight is like asking if Chuck could beat Shaq in a 1 on 1 basketball game.

it probably is, but at the same time chuck couldnt take a direct full punch from shaq without going down. so maybe he could take him under the right circumstances but there would be a very slim margin for error for liddell.
