Wore one.
Loved it.
Yea, it looked cool, but the practicality of it was for my own protection. Criminals know the police codes. So no matter what is said over the radio, they know the language/jargon. The other plus was I was able to hear other officers and dispatchers with out all the traffic and crowd noise. It would also suck to be searching a building trying to be quiet and the dispatcher or other officers call out on the radio. You can't turn it off or down because you may need to communicate during an emergency.

Less noise from chatter coming out of the hand set and it is easier to hear what information is coming to you if you are in a situation with alot of noise. This can be a life saver if dispatch is sending important information you might need before walking into a dangerous situation....
Not to mention, if you are talking with someone and the radio is going nutz, it won't distract the person you are talking to, but you won't have to turn it down and miss information either.

It helps hear radio traffic better. It is safer for the officer when dealing with a wanted person, as they cannot hear the dispatcher telling the officer the details of the warrant. Helps us to be quieter when searching a building., etc.
Mainly Officer safety issues.

So the bad guys cannot hear the police radio. If I have you stopped on the side of the road and dispatch informs me that you are some sicko serial killer with 20 warrants out for your arrest, I'd like to know it and not him so the element of surprise is on my side. Plus I was hard of hearing anyway.

Hey, I wore one because I could hear the dispatch radio better AND any civilian I was near couldn't.
They are expensive (at least the good ones are) and with me it had nothing to do with looking discreet, because I usually work in my full uniform.
