Possibly denial. Is there any apparent reasons behind his alcohol abuse?
He may be so concerned about your sister because he feels that as the parent, he should be, and should be encouraging bad habits. Suggest that he talk to your sister about it instead of you.
If you and your father have a close relationship, you could try and approach the subject of his alcohol abuse in the same way he approached you about your sister smoking.

There are times that humans accept their downfalls, but as a parent you will always want better for your children. My Mother always told me, "Don't do as I do, do as I say". It may be he has accepted his faults,,,, but then again, he may not see that he has a problem. Too hard to call. But smoking is bad for everyone!!!!

he's in denial.
if he's drinking daily and drinking quite a bit....he's definately an alcoholic. As for your 16yr old sis smoking..thats not good but it's her choice. As for your dad not "seeing a problem with this or with his own circumstances" ......he's in denial but seriously needs help.
Goodluck with that

you know that is a good question....
My father was a drunk
I also had a brother thatwas a drunk... I HATED IT
in the seventies I HATED DRUNKS. COULD NOT STAND EM
I got into drugs and thought I was better cause I was a druggie but not a drunk... some times we can not see our selves the way we need to. but you are correct how can we preach at our kids when we are as guilty at doing wrong as they are....

maybe it has to do with her age...maybe he thinks because she is still a minor that she started too soon.
a lot of people have this problem. a lot of people point out flaws about other people when they have a problem that is similar (or even worse). he may do it to take the spotlight off of his problem.

He is in denial. If you are in school, why don't you talk to your counselor about this? Maybe he/she can help.
