A while ago, I told my brother to stop saying "****." "Who decided that this word was a curse word," he responded. I can't wait to read edifying responses! I mean, the Bible doesn't specifically say what words are or aren't curse words, right?

the bible says 2 things regarding this:
- do not take the name of the Lord in vain
- love your neighbour as yourself

I suppose your interpretation of the above is up to you.
I'm sure various forms of cursing has been in existence since time began.... but I'll continue to adhere to the above, as well as impart the following wisdom: "truly intelligent people have no need to use cursing or derogatory language to communicate"

Our culture truly decides what words are Curse words. Most of the words now a days were not bad in bible times, but our culture has created new meanings of these words. So now everyone recognizes that these words are now wrong and corrupt. The bible isn't going to list words, if it did our culture would probably create new words, but there is one verse that sums up this whole issue: Eph 4:29 "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers." This verse says that we should say nothing negative, whether it be a corrupt word or running someone down. People should know we are Christians by the way we talk and live our life. Remind your brother that he has a testimony to keep, and a God to please and serve.

There is no section of the bible dealing with profanity. Over time, different societies have determined, by context, what words are considered obscene.

And, sometimes words can be both. Many curse words are also legitimate words when used properly.

@ss is an animal, commonly talked about in the bible. But, when used to put someone down, or talk about certain body parts, it becomes obscene.

B@stard is a term for a child born to parents who are not married. But, use it in a derogatory way, and it is not acceptable.

B*tch is a term for a female dog. Again, used in a derogatory manner, and it is obscene.

Many of the terms become "obscene" because they are of a sexual nature. For example:

It is ok to use p*ssy when referring to a p*ssycat. But, talk about a female body part, and there you have it.

C*ck is ok when it is a verb talking about making a gun ready to be fired. But, use it to talk about a man's body part, and it is frowned upon.

So basically, the context of the word is what makes it obscene.

Then, there are words that really have no legitmate meanings other than being obscene. The F-bomb, the C word rhyming with hunt, etc. Of course, again it is the contect of their use that makes them obscene, but to my knowledge there isn't another use for those words.

The Bible doesn't consider. It's a book and as such an inanimate object.

People who read the Bible do all the considering, and often, not well.
