I know of people that have gotten sucked into marriage with someone from another country only to have them file for divorce after the time period needed for them to become a permanent resident.

Man that I know that had this done to him - filed on the woman with INS (found letters that she had written and presented them to the INS to support his claim). He now has custody of the child she had with him - and she is back in south America.

That sucks. I guess they don't pay attention as much because it's harder to prove, especially if the person managed to fool his/her spouse into getting married. The person could easily say that after the marriage they changed their mind or found something out about their spouse that they decided they couldn't live with and it's hard to prove otherwise.

You don't hear so much about marriage fraud because we are blessed with skilled immigration officers who, most of the time, will identify sham marriages early on and remove the offending immigrant with minimal fuss.

When I went for my immigration interview, I saw someone being led away, discreetly, and my attorney told me he was most likely illegal and headed for the detention center several floors below.

Of course some people will get away with it. People get away with all sorts of crimes. If you have evidence which is of value to immigration enforcement, feel free to pick up the phone and tell them about it.
