ahhh Hindu is not a language, Hindi, yes now that is a language.
Also, the word Hindu was actually given by the Persians, Arabs and Muslims. Who came to India, in different time periods. The reason they are called Hindu is because they lived near the Hindu-Kush mountians, which are very huge. Which is in Modern day Pakistan/Indian territory.

I saw one of the answer says "its udnih" which is not true. I am hindu. Hindu is not a language. It is a religion. So, there is not translation. India is India.
By the way, "udnih" is like a scarf which you put around your neck or cover your head.

The language is called Hindi, the people who follow Hinduism as a religion are called Hindus.
Anyway, "India" is known as "Bhaarat" or "Hindustaan" in Hindi.
Udnih has no meaning...
