Clinically speaking, people with OCD are not crazy. On the mental illness spectrum, OCD lies at the polar neurotic end; it could not be further from psychotic (i.e. crazy). Although obsessions and delusions may reflect manifestations of the same symptom, there is a phenomenological distinction.

OCD symptoms are marked nosological entities, which only effect part of the personality. A fascinating attribute of OCD ‘sufferers’, is their insight into their behavior and irrational acknowledgement of it. Furthermore, such individuals lack a distorted perception of reality necessary to clinically characterizes one as ‘crazy’.

Lastly, OCD has one of the highest comorbid rates and up to 60% of patients are treatment resistant. It is thus hypothesized that OCD is a coping mechanism and not in as much a disorder. In fact, in the research planning agenda leading up to the DSM-V, one of the considerations is to take OCD out of the category of anxiety disorders and to cluster it with a group of related obsessive-compulsive behavior conditions.

At best, individuals with OCD are hardworking, righteous, perfectionistic, persevering, meticulous and prudent. At worst, they appear quite odd.

Never say your crazy because this is actually fairly common stuff, especially the ice cube thing. I learned in my psychology class that to an extent everyone is OCD. You may be bipolar and paranoid though but maybe your getting mad so often has to do with being paranoid your instinctual when your scared so the well being of others is not on your mind. Mention it to your parents they may be able to get you some medicine or they can talk about a phychologist. 1-5 people have a pretty serious mental illness and if anyone tells you your crazy then ask if they think 20% of the world is crazy.

OCD would likely be classified as a neurotic syndrom, as opposed to psychotic. as such, they have behavior disorders that do affect their lifestyle, but they are certainly not crazy. some very famous peole that have accomplished a lot probably have an ocd personality. edison and newton were prolific in their work, but they were also probably compulsive in their behavior. were they crazy? certainly not? are ocd people happy? probably not.

a person who is compulsive ro obsessive will likely never change regardless of the method of therapy used. they have developed coping mechanisms to help them deal with life and it works for them. they may have routines that they fell they must follow and this is how they live. and they get by regardless. as we all do, regardless.

The term "crazy" is used so much these days, anything unusual is considered crazy. I have a co worker that is OCD and yeah I think she's a little coo coo but it's not like I'd fear her as meantally unstable - she's just throwed off a little.

No, they are not considered crazy. They just have obsessive compulsive reactions, like excessive hand cleansing. Only ignorant people would consider OCD people crazy. Let me state it this way instead; only uninformed people would consider OCD people crazy.

Best wishes

It is considered to be a mental disorder, however I dont think that having OCD should be considered insane. Otherwise they would have to say that people with terrets are crazy as well, both are considered mental diseases and both lead to uncontrollable outbursts or movements.

In my opinion, OCD is more of a hinderance but in it's extreme versions, they're definetly crazy. If you have OCD (mild) than you might be annoying or aggravating... if you have OCD(extreme) than you're probably considered all out insane. It has a wierd curve as how insane you are to how bad your case is...

I hope that makes sense.

it depends. if the obsessive compulsion is to always make sure you have your keys, i would call that a little nutty. If your obsessive compulsion is to chop heads off of people, i would call that crazy. But hey, all of us are nutty or crazy in our own way, and to others. I've never been analyzed, but i bite my nails to the nub. i would call that ocd, and i'll agree i'm a nut, but crazy? Not me. (or me).

clinically speaking i don't know the answer. socially speaking i think their seen as crazy. personally i think it's no more then a deeply ingrained habit formed due to misplaced importance. this habit becomes compounded over time.
