PVC will not corrode if you are using it for water. However, if you are using it in a chemical processing plant you will want to buy Hansons hand book. This book lists all of the materials piping is made from and the chemicals they are compatible with.

If your using it about 3 times daily it'll start to get really brown in merely a few days. It can be controlled by thoroughly rinsing the pipe in heavy salt and water solution. shake vigorously. Using sand would be better as it takes away the grime and tar no worries about hurting the plastic. A good pipe can last asw long as a year with constant use. But lets say you burn too close to the tip then noxious fumes will get in the way of your toke so just remember to light and release and just suck to keep the buds alight... hope that helps. Works for me. bongs are nice
