Trying to attach backer board to subfloor. What adhesive is required? We have thinset mortar...will this work? My home improvment book says to apply "adhesive" so basically just trying to find out if they are the same thing or exchangable. Thanks!

If you are using backer board made for ceramic or porcelain tile you MUST thinset the board down and SCREW it down! In your case thinset is the same thing as adhesive. Most backer boards for tile installation are marked with a grid pattern to show where and how often the screws go. Be sure to use screws for tile installation not Sheetrock screws.
Thinset helps keep the board stable , eliminates hollow spots beneath the board and generally makes for a sound, solid installation. This is the foundation for a floor that has a 50 year lifespan. It does not pay to try to skimp here.

Thinset is adhesive of a sort, but is is for installing tile not backer board. Thinset is applied wet, after mixing it with water. The moisture may cause the backer board to swell. I do not think you should use it to apply your backer board. Ask the people where you bought the backer board what adhesive to use.
