Consider your wedding size & amount of guests. Is it formal or informal? For informal i would think at least 3 hours. Everyone gets all dressed up to see each other, socialize, why not make it a little longer. The time is sure to fly by. A more formal wedding, can go much longer. I am getting married in May, with a wedding party of 14, over 200 guests - Our reception is from 6 - 12:30. Dinner dancing & games, I guess it depends on the itinerary as well.

I've heard that the average time is around 4 hours, but it really depends on a number of factors. (I think most wedding service contracts, such as DJs, are for 4-6 hours.)
For instance, are they getting married in the morning and having a brunch reception? Then maybe 2 hours. Is it a small family reception over snacks? Then maybe 2-3 hours. Are you including dinner and/or dancing after an afternoon wedding? Then maybe 4 or more hours.
I'm getting married in the fall -- the ceremony will be in the late afternoon (probably 3-4:00), and then we'll have a dinner reception immediately after. We're planning to stay and dance until after midnight, and I'd consider all of that to be the reception. So, than will be about 7-8 hours.

I think it depends on your family and the time of day the reception is. My reception is going to start around 2pm and I am sure that there will still be people there until 9-10pm. That's just how my family is. Weddings are a big party here. We will be there all night!!

I'm thinking like 4-6 hours. party all night. I would not put a stop time. My wedding my reception started about 7:45pm and by the time the last guest left it was pushing 2am.

Most common is 4 hours but it depends on everything else that is going on that day. We don't have much going on other than the chruch and pics so we are doing 5 hours, it starts at 5:00 and over at 10:00 this way it is just in time for dinner and everyone can eat, have a good time and still go out after if they want

Depend on the hall, the time of the date, the date, your family and friend (if they are the type of people who hungs around more than 4 hours), the budget.
The normal time is 3-4 hours, but if you are having it at a place where time is no limit, you have more time.

Depends on your times, the program, what form the dinner is taking, and the times you have planned for the band to play and the open bar.
Usual would be:
Cocktails 5:30
Dinner 6:30
Programme to follow
Dance 8:30
