Greek ofcourse. Modern greek. Evidence? Well i 'm in greece and i speak greek and guess what, people around seem to understand me perfectly! Oh, and i understand them as well, lol !! Hmm seriously this evidence request is kind of weird. It's like asking for evidence about the english people speaking modern english, it' s self evident and obvious to those who know the old language. I don't know what evidence u have in mind. Perhaps an ethnological or linguistical study will help u. Here are a few examples of simple everyday modern greek words, u can compare if u know any ancient greek. If u don't, i don't see what kind of linguistical evidence u could evaluate anyway.

they-some times- do speak Greek; most of the times youngsters talk greekglish!!!!!
greek language has an old history and it's unique, not stemming from any other! Greek alphabet is the father of the Latin alphabet, as it is! when Aeneas left troy with his family-Trojans being a Greek tribe- went to stay in the Greek island of Evia for about 3 years. then he headed over (to) lazio in Italy. the indigents, Etruscans, writing on a cuneo form had to set some conflicts with the Trojans until the roman people rised out of this mixture, and of course started using the Greek alpha bet. this alphabet remained unchanged, whereas in Greece the alphabet started undergoing modificati ons by the years going by.....until its present form!
so, in short, Greek language affected very much the world's literature!

They speak modern Demotic Greek. The notion of 'evidence' sounds irrelevant to me. In 1976, Katharevousa, in other words 'pure', or formal, Greek (from 'catharos', or pure) was replaced by Demotic, the common language of the people (from 'demos', or people). Is that what you are looking for?

Greek people speak Greek language. It is one of the most ancient languages and many of the terms in science, literature, etc. are "borrowed" from Greek. For example, "neurology", " phobia", "philology", "morphology", "sintaxis", etc. are all from Greek.
If will serve you as piece of evidence can write you using the Greek alphabet some words, like "αγαπω" ("αgapo", love), " Η Ελλαδα" ("Ι Εlada", Greece), "Με λενε.." ("Me lene..", My name is.. ), Η Αθηνα ("I Athina", Athens )

Hope that helps!
