Help With Legos?

What is the lego set the includes gears, axles and has long peices that hace holes in their sides?

Originally they were part of the Technic line only. Today you'll see pieces like that also in the Creator line, sometimes Bionicle (though the longer pieces tend to be custom shapes for bionicle body pieces) and maybe exo-force.

Technic is the line that uses them a lot.
(I remember building some pretty large vehicles, with 4 cylinder engines and funtional transmissions)
