I served in the US Navy from 1982 - 1986 . However when it comes to certain entitlements and veterans preference (for jobs or otherwise) , I am not eligible for many of these . There is a period from after Vietnam in 1975 to the Gulf War 1991, that people are not given veterans status . This would include men who were in Beruit, Grenada , Gitmo , 38th parrallel, Berlin Wall or anywhere else where men were deployed in service to this country . Although this was a time of relative peace , a presence was always required in other parts of the world . There was as much risk of a breakout of any kind of hostilities ,as there was prior to the break out of The Gulf war . It was also the buildup of the US military at this time , that created a arms race with the Soviets , that brought about thier demise . I am of the opinion , that because of the sheer numbers of men that served during this time . The policy of this government is to save money by denying these men entitlements they r owed

I know its not just people from my period of service who got screwed. Its a sin what the government gets away with , and somehow it goes unreported ( Media is controlled really). Guess that the saying is true that a good soldier never dies , he only fades away. At least thats the way our leaders want it .

As you may have noticed, it is the job of politicans to deny your benefits in such a way as to appear to be expanding them.

You site just one example, there are many others. I heard of one guy who was denied > 30% disablity even though he had 2 legs and one arm blown off. WTF?

What we do to vets is immoral. Thank you for your service.

Well, it would require you do define "veteran", and the benefits you claim you've missed or been denied.

ANYONE discharged honorably since the time of Vietnam following a full enlistment is a "veteran" under the Veteran's Administration.

Benefits you would have had from your service in the USN:

1) your Montgomery GI Bill for a period of ten years following discharge.
2) VA Housing Loan Guarantee.

YES, THE Department of VA IS a glorious bureaucratic cluster foxtrot... but only when we LET it remain so.

I served in USN from 1985-1999... I used my GI Bill, am keeping my VA Loan for later... I get no pension because I didn't serve my 20. My medical discharge wasn't sufficient for a disability, and again because I didn't do 20 yrs to retire... that's about all I'm entitled to.

I think ONE thing is that many think their entitled to things their NOT because they were lied to by a recruiter, or didn't read the fine print.

Check the rules again. They are now considering anyone who served from 1947 to 1991 as veterans of the Cold War. They even have a medal for those who served at that time.

Can you define the exact entitlements that veterans of that time period do not get that verteans of other time periods do?

BTW - people with service in Beriut and Grenada are considered to be 'combat veterans' by the VA.

And that is why the VA is having to restructure its entire system. It took my dad 3 years to get VA benefits, and he fought in Vietnam. They are still denying treatment to veterans that were exposed to agent orange in the last Gulf war.

Sorry - I don't know what to tell you. I for one appreciate your service.

Call a congressman is the only thing I can think of. Maybe you can help bring change and help countless others.
